The British Royal Mint was established in 886 and is the official mint of the United Kingdom, responsible for producing currency and coins for the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint is one of the largest and most technically advanced mints in the world. Today, the Royal Mint is located in Llantrisant, South Wales, and is also responsible for the production of coins for other countries and a range of commemorative coins and medals. It produces circulation and commemorative coins, medals and bullion.
The British Royal Mint has decided to issue a set of coins featuring heraldic animals of British royal families, which will be minted for ten years, but each year the coins will have a different motif on the reverse side. A series of ten heraldic sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 was chosen as the model for the coin designs. The series of coins features heraldic animals – the lion of England, the griffin of Edward III, the falcon of the Plantagenets, the black bull of the Dukes of Clarence, the Yale of the Dukes of Beaufort, the white lion of Mortimer, the white greyhound of Richmond, the red dragon of Wales, the unicorn of Scotland, and the white horse of Hanover. Their stylized appearance for the coin series was designed by the talented engraver Jody Clark. The obverse side features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by the same artist as the reverse side. The inscription ELIZABETH II. D'G'REG'F'D and the nominal value are also featured. This makes this issue not only a suitable investment coin, but also an interesting collector's item. The coin is made of pure silver 999.9/1000 Ag and weighs 2 oz and 10 oz.
