The U.S. Mint is located in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1792 by Congress under the Coinage Act and was administered by the Department of State after its creation. According to the original letter of the law, the first Mint building was located in Philadelphia; the current headquarters is in Washington, D.C., but it operates in Denver, San Francisco, and West Point in addition to Philadelphia. The Mint is government-owned and mints primarily current circulation coins. The most popular are the gold and silver American Eagle, which have been minted since 1986. According to an unconfirmed rumor, George Washington even donated some of his silver to the company so it could mint coins as soon as possible.
